In Switzerland, a foreign driver’s license is only valid for up to one year after your arrival. Therefore, it is crucial to convert it within 12 months of entering the country, provided the license is still valid at the time of conversion. If you miss this deadline, we strongly advise against continuing to drive in Switzerland and recommend converting your foreign license as soon as possible.

Swiss authorities also require an eye test. This is mandatory for everyone, and the results, which are valid for two years, must be recorded on the application form.

Depending on the nationality of your license, a driving assessment (called a “Kontrollfahrt”) may be required when converting your license, even if you already possess a foreign license of the same category. Once you have passed this test, your Swiss driver’s license will be sent to you by post.

The requirements for converting a category B license vary depending on nationality. There are generally two categories, both of which require a valid Swiss eye test.

Category 1 includes all nationalities that are exempt from the driving assessment. These are:
  • All EU/EFTA countries
  • Andorra
  • Australia
  • Israel
  • Japan
  • Canada
  • Republic of Korea
  • Morocco
  • Monaco
  • New Zealand
  • San Marino
  • Singapore
  • Taiwan
  • Tunisia
  • USA

Category 2 includes all other countries (non-EU/EFTA). Individuals with a driver’s license from one of these countries are required to take the driving assessment.

For the driving assessment, please bring the following:
  • Original foreign driver’s license
  • Invitation to the practical test
  • Original identification documents
  • A roadworthy vehicle
  • Vehicle registration document for the test vehicle

It is important to note that you have three months from the date of registration to take the driving assessment. The test cannot be repeated. If you fail, you are no longer allowed to drive in Switzerland. In addition, your foreign license will be revoked and you must obtain a Swiss license through the standard process (including theory exam, learner’s permit, traffic theory course, and practical test).
