Switzerland is a dream destination for many expats—but getting settled can feel overwhelming. That’s why Simplecare is here to help guide you through everything you need to know to live like a local.

1. Do Your Research

Before moving to Switzerland, take time to explore your career prospects, housing options, permits, and the country’s high cost of living. Planning ahead will make your transition smoother.

Here are some useful resources to get started:

2. Residence Permits

You must register at the local municipality within 14 days of arrival. For stays longer than three months, you’ll need a residence permit. Bringing a pet? Make sure they have a valid pet passport.

3. Finding a Place to Live

Housing is competitive in Switzerland—especially in cities where up to 85% of residents rent. Be prepared with documents like your residence permit, work contract, and proof of income.

Tip: Your rent should ideally not exceed one-third of your monthly income. If the rental deposit (often three months’ rent) is too steep, consider a rental deposit insurance option.

4. Health & Other Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory in Switzerland. You have three months to choose a plan after arrival. If you work more than 8 hours a week for one employer, accident insurance is included—otherwise, you’ll need to add it to your policy.

Most residents get a basic plan first, then add supplementary policies. With so many options, it’s smart to talk to an expert.

Let Simplecare guide you to the best plan for your needs.

You might also want personal liability or legal insurance—they’re affordable and can save you from unexpected costs.

“In Switzerland, the cost-benefit ratio for personal liability insurance is so high that it’s almost unthinkable not to have it.” — Evgeniy Timoshenko, Partner at Simplecare.ch
5. Working in Switzerland

Plan your career early. Switzerland has booming sectors like IT, finance, and healthcare. Find jobs on platforms like jobs.ch or jobscout24.ch.

If unemployed, register at your regional job center (RAV). As of June 2023, Switzerland’s unemployment rate was just 1.9%—one of the lowest in Europe.

If you work remotely for a foreign employer, make sure you understand your social security obligations.

6. Customs, Banking & Communication

When importing household items, prove that you’re relocating. This may require a work contract, rental agreement, or proof of departure from your previous country.

You’ll also need to open a Swiss bank account—bring your residence permit and work contract. Notify your postal service about your move and request mail forwarding. Lastly, set up phone and internet, and be aware of the TV/radio feebilled by Serafe.

7. Taxes

Switzerland has a tiered tax system: federal, cantonal, and municipal. To avoid costly mistakes, get help from a tax advisor who understands the local system.

8. Driving in Switzerland

Foreign driving licenses are valid for up to one year after arrival. Convert yours before the deadline—if it’s still valid—otherwise you must stop driving until it’s exchanged.

A vision test is mandatory and valid for two years. More info here.

Also, car insurance is mandatory. To ensure full protection, consider comprehensive coverage.

Switzerland is rich in history and natural beauty. Locals value balance—work hard, play hard. From hiking and skiing to vibrant festivals, there’s always something happening.
